Reviewing Your Job Offer

Review Neonatology Salary Data

Understanding the fairness and appropriateness of the salary offer requires a knowledge of fair market value, which may be unfamiliar to many just out of training.

You should be realistic about your starting salary and remember that there is more to the position than just your recurring paycheck.

When reviewing your job offer, you must have a good idea of fair market and neonatology salaries.

There are many facets to a full compensation package, and an equal number of “non-comp” considerations such as cost-of-living, schedule, location-location-location, and the intangible impacts on your family’s happiness.

What Data Do We Have Available?

Data regarding Neonatology-specific salaries has improved over the last several years, but there are numerous imperfections in the data collection, and there is no single “source of truth” when it comes to salary.

Much of the information available is based on voluntary surveys.  Overall response rates in some surveys are rather low.  When reviewing this data, it is important to note that in some cases there was no discrete distinction between academic vs. private vs. hospital-employed positions.

Additionally, geographic differences were only disclosed in some surveys.  Making an apples to apples comparison between an actual job offer and these compensation reports is therefore exceedingly difficult.

Neonatology Salary Data

When looking at the specialty of neonatalogy specifically, four distinct surveys or blended survey summaries are included below which provide some information regarding average or median salary.

It is important to recognize that each is measured differently with a unique methodology.

Use these data points to become familiar with salary information and use as your guide for what to generally expect when it comes to your salary offer, but remember that there can be wide variation.

Neonatology Salary Ranges

Of course, median and mean data only tells part of the story.

Salary range data can be informative as well.  A tight salary range suggests little variability in the market, while a wide range indicates that many forces are at play with geographic, work responsibility, practice type, and supply/demand forces all likely contributing significant influence.

The very wide range between 25th and 90th percentiles, shown below, indicates that there are many dynamics influencing compensation.  Unfortunately, teasing these dynamics out of the survey data is quite difficult.

Averages of the 25th, 50th, 75th, and 9oth percentiles were calculated from the included reports.
