As you start your neonatology job search, make sure you fully undestand your practice options.

Demystify Your Job Search.

As you start to consider post-fellowship jobs, you likely have the following question.

What are my options in addition to Academia?

Most fellows typically view their choices as one of two categories:  private practice and academics.  A better way to delineate your options may be:

Academic vs. Non-Academic

While the difference may seem subtle, there has been much transformation of practice attributes over the last decade, and in addition to the well-known aspects of the academic setting in which we’ve all trained, there’s a big bucket of everything else.

Fellows, and even some long-term academic faculty, may have limited knowledge of the “everything else,” and I frequently field questions from career-searchers trying to gain a better understanding of what practice options actually exist.

So, what’s the everything else???

Private Practice

Hospital Employment

HMO Positions

Locum Tenens

As you start your neonatology job search, make sure you fully undestand your practice options.

Why does it matter?

Awareness.

NS Nugget:

3 vs 30
Fellowship training is 3 years. Your career as a Neonatologist could easily be 30. Identifying your best long-term fit requires a thorough consideration of all options as you embark on your search.
